Meet the High Sheriff’s Team

Serving Berkshire through community, tradition, and leadership.

The Under-Sheriff

Jonathan Gater

Jonathan Gater is a partner at Blandy & Blandy LLP, specialising in estate and trust administration, tax planning, and Court of Protection work. He joined the firm in 1991 and was appointed Under Sheriff of Berkshire in 2002. Blandy & Blandy has a long association with the role, dating back to 1837.

The position of Under Sheriff has existed since the 12th century, supporting the High Sheriff with legal duties. By law, each High Sheriff must appoint an Under Sheriff within one month of taking office. Traditionally a solicitor, the Under Sheriff ensures the legal continuity of the office.

Today the office is mainly ceremonial, but Jonathan remains central to organising the annual swearing-in of the High Sheriff, liaising with the courts on judicial visits, and helping lead the service marking the opening of the Crown Court each October.

Chaplain to the High Sheriff

The Reverend Gareth Morley

Rev Gareth Morley is Area Dean of Bracknell and Rector of Easthampstead Benefice. He brings extensive experience in both community leadership and public service. Before ordination, he served for 12 years with Thames Valley Police, later volunteering as Chaplain and receiving an award for his contribution.

As Chaplain to the High Sheriff of Berkshire 2025–26, Gareth provides spiritual guidance and supports the office’s religious duties. He advises on interfaith matters, helps organise services, and leads prayers at official occasions.

His role ensures that faith and community remain at the heart of the High Sheriff’s work, strengthening links across Berkshire’s diverse communities.
